Phillip Island GP Circuit

The 2006 Ride:

Commencing at Bairnsdale, East Gippsland, Victoria, over 700 motorcyclists registered to participate in the Third Memorial Ride to Phillip Island for the MotoGP weekend and enjoyed a controlled lap of the Grand Prix Circuit in memory of the man who was . . . and always will be . . . a legend - Barry Sheene

Due to the MotoGP being held in September 2006, the Alps were still in the recognised Snow Season which prevented vehicles not carrying snow chains from crossing Mt Hotham. This effectively prevented bikers from accessing the Great Alpine Road via Mt Hotham. However, the lower route via Anglers Rest was available as an alternative.

A limit of 850 was placed on the number of bikes participating in a lap of the Circuit. While the numbers that participated seemed much greater, no one was denied a lap.

The night before the ride, an evening of fun and entertainment was held at the Bairnsdale RSL, where the annual Auction raised over $10,000 for Lifeline Gippsland. Several 'collectors items' were auctioned which added greatly to the fund-raising. 2,300 'Tribute Ride pins were also sold.

As with the past years, the 2006 ride was a tremendous success, so get your mates and be part of the 2007 ride. Diary it now. Book early if you require accommodation in Bairnsdale - contact the East Gippsland Visitor Information - Free call 1800 637 060 or visit www.lakesandwilderness.com.au

The committee are looking to make the 2007 ride even bigger and better - so be there!
