  • Suspension which recovers quickly from changing road conditions
  • Steering-head and swingarm bearings which ensure the wheels remain in alignment during braking, cornering or acceleration
  • An engine which idles evenly, accelerates and decelerates smoothly without "hesitations"
  • No fluid leaks from the forks, brakes, suspension or engine
  • Lights and instruments which are operational at all times
  • Brakes which operate smoothly and predictably
  • Tires with legal tread depth and correct pressure
Wear the right Gear . . .

For safety, wear the best you can afford :

  • Helmet should be in good condition and well fitting
  • Solid Boots without boot laces
  • Jacket with protective inserts for elbows, back and shoulders
  • Trousers which will protect you in and 'off'
  • Gloves designed for existing weather conditions
  • Accessories such as driving glasses, vest,
    neck-warmer / cooler & pack wet-weather gear

Hints:
1. Do not overload the rear of your bike when touring, this could make your bike unstable when cornering.
2. Be seen - make sure you and your bike are visible

When cornering . . .

Remember there is no room for errors when it comes to cornering:

  • Line-up by obtaining the correct speed and gear before entering the corner
  • Position yourself on the road taking into account sight, surface and space
  • Enter wide to increase your vision through the corner, stay wide until you see the exit. Plan to exit with ample space between you and oncoming vehicles.
  • Negotiate the bend smoothly and accelerate to the exit
  • Remember you can't see around corners or bends, so ride to your ability and line of site. You never know what is around the corner!
  • Be aware of your body and head position. Ensuring you are not over the white line will go a long way to keeping your head!
