Sleep Debt (Fatigue)

Make sure you've had enough sleep before you ride . . .

"Sleep Debt" - the accumulated amount of lost sleep

  • The larger the 'sleep debt', the stronger the tendency to fall asleep.
  • The size of the 'sleep debt' determines the strength of the tendency to fall asleep at any particular moment while we are awake.
  • 'Sleep debt' does not go away by itself. It must be repaid, just like a financial debt.
  • Even the smallest 'sleep debt' affects our ability to react, our judgment and even our behaviour.
  • It is recognised as the major risk factor for all road users, affecting up to 25% of serious crashes.
  • Motorcyclists are more effected because of the physical effort required to handle their machines
It is essential that riders take breaks every 2 hours so they can maintain their strength and mental focus.

Victoria is 'motorcycle paradise' with the Great Divide and the coastal fringe as its playground. Good sealed roads winding through the mountains with magnificant views. But long rides and winding roads take their toll on riders, in conditions which require 100% of your attention. There are many potential obstacles - wildlife such as wombats and wallabies, stray cattle or farm vehicles, rock slides or washes from recent rains. You need to be alert to survive.

It is important to make sure you've had enough sleep before you set out on any ride. If you don't get enough sleep you go into 'sleep debt' and you have an increased risk of a fatigue-related crash until you 'pay' that debt by having a good night's sleep.

ONLY SLEEP WILL CURE FATIGUE !!

Responsible Open Road Tourers stop regularly for a walk around to keep alert. There are lots of great cafes along the way where you can break up a ride or even settle back in a corner for a 10 minute 'power nap'.

It is more strenuous riding a motorbike than driving a car. It is essential that riders take breaks every 2 hours so they can maintain the strength and mental focus that will allow them to continue to ride safely.

Proponents of this project are participants in the East Gippsland Road Safety Strategic Steering Committee, incorporated into local government across Victoria, in partnership with VicRoads, Victoria Police, the Transport Accident Commission, LG Pro, the Municipal Association of Victoria and the RACV.
